Benque Free Zone update

This update was sent in by an eye witness. Western Border update: 31-3-14 @1:30PM Game of cat and mouse, while Guatemalan security forces went for lunch, time to work fast! 🙂 Despite the gun fire and confiscation of goods by security forces earlier, see pics inside SAT office, the trafficking of contraband of illicit goods continue flowing from the Benque Viejo Free Zone, using under aged youths to carry in the goods through the contraband trails into Guatemala. The logic they run faster and the Guatemalan authorities will not arrest minors; See attached pictures of youths going up the trail, […]

Belize Contraband Turns Violent on Western Border

Armed contrabandistas shot their way across the Western Border crossing with Guatemala one evening about two weeks ago causing a serious International Incident. Reports from the border have shown the Contraband business coming from the Benque Viejo Free Zone at the Western Border has escalated into a violent confrontation with Guatemalan SAT officers manning the crossing between Benque and Melchor de Mencos. The peaceful nature of this usually quiet and unarmed border crossing was shattered as two trucks loaded with suspected contraband successfully entered Guatemala territory by use of force at the heavily traveled legal border crossing at Melchor de […]

SKELETON ARGUMENT OF THE CLAIMANTS APPENDIX B: INTERNATIONAL LEGAL OBLIGATIONS OF BELIZE 1. Shared by Amauri Marconi Leal The Ministry of Defense “rethinks” of mobilizing army special forces in Petén – kaibiles-, specifically to areas close to the line of adjacency with Belize, after military bullet injured a Guatemalan, a fact which is attached to a long history of incidents in that area. A Message to Belizeans

For quite some time now, some of us have stated emphatically that going to the ICJ is not a viable option through which Belize should seek an end to Guatemala’s unfounded claim to our sovereign territory. During this period, we have been maligned by those who opt to tow the line and adhere to the status quo. That has not deterred us, for we know that our position is based on the truth and reality. Recently, a certain gentleman gave an interview in which I believe he actually highlighted a critical element on which many who oppose going to the […]

Commentary: With OAS blessing, Belize acquiesces to Guatemala demands… as usual

Belizeans and true friends of Belize, By now, you have most likely heard that the GOB caved in to the DEMANDS of Guatemala and allowed the OAS to shirk its responsibility to carryout its duty as an impartial arbiter. As matters currently stand: (1) Guatemala reneged on its commitment to hold simultaneous referenda on 6th October 2013, (2) with the blessing of the GOB they have been allowed to do so, without rebuke and (3) the government of Guatemala has been rewarded for their intransigence by getting precisely what they want. Tell me, do you feel it is finally time to […]

INTERNATIONALIZATION CAMPAIGN 1

Guatemala refused to resume negotiations until Britain reduced its troop strength in Belize. It was not until 1975, after Belize’s election in late 1974 that the talks resumed. However, Guatemala’s position seemed to have hardened since they were demanding the cession of the southern quarter of Belize in return for recognizing the independence of the rest. This prompted the Belize government to embark on a radically new approach in which it would have to gain the support of the world to its independence. Therefore, the objectives of its internationalisation campaign were: To gain the support of as many nations as […]

BELIZE NEEDS TO BE SAVED FROM WILFRED “SEDI” ELRINGTON 1

by Eamon H. Courtenay Dear Editor, On the Channel 5 newscast for February 11, 2012, Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Attorney General, gave an interview in which he once again acted completely contrary to the national interests of Belize. Mr. Elrington said: “But because the land border is already defined and the southern border is already defined, I am confident that nothing untoward can happen with respect to those two. The only place I think there is room for some surprise would have to be in the sea area or perhaps in the insular area, because those […]
