Belize Political Assessment

Originally Released on 2013-02-13 00:00 GMT The Government of Belize (GOB) welcomes Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) although the investment climate has cooled over the past year. There is a number of disputes between U.S. and other foreign investors and various GOB agencies as well as new legislation that hampers the ability of investors to seek arbitration to resolve disputes. (DOS) The Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) was established to serve as a one-stop-shop for export and investment assistance but bureaucratic red tape may still be encountered when seeking government fiscal incentives. (DOS) Government investment incentives include: Fiscal Incentives […]

BCJ CALLS FOR CIVIL SOCIETY TO BOYCOTT RESCHEDULED REFERENDUM 1

PRESS RELEASE 11th May 2013 BELIZE COALITION FOR JUSTICE CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF RESCHEDULED REFERENDUM Following the recent meeting held between Belize’s Foreign Affairs personnel and their Guatemalan counterparts at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., under the aegis of the OAS Secretary General, it was announced that the decision was taken to acquiesce to the DEMANDS of the Guatemalans to postpone the referendum. Undoubtedly this decision by the GOB, is consistent with its failed foreign policy involving Guatemala, which is steeped in: ACCEPTANCE, ACCOMMODATION AND CAPITULATION. It does not bode well for Belize, for it demonstrates distinct weakness and […]

Commentary: With OAS blessing, Belize acquiesces to Guatemala demands… as usual

Belizeans and true friends of Belize, By now, you have most likely heard that the GOB caved in to the DEMANDS of Guatemala and allowed the OAS to shirk its responsibility to carryout its duty as an impartial arbiter. Tell me, do you feel it is finally time to […]

THE ICJ AND GUATEMALA'S CLAIM TO BELIZE: A CASE OF SELF INTEREST OVER SOVEREIGNTY? 6

The government of Belize (GOB) recently announced the date on which it shall commence, in earnest, its highly questionable “(Mis)Education Campaign” for the impending simultaneous referenda to be held on 6th October 2013, concerning whether the matter of Guatemala’s unfounded claim to Belize’s sovereign territory should be submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for a presumed “final determination”.   My position is clear: “No to the ICJ”. Yet I am compelled to highlight a matter which I find increasingly more unnerving. Due to the GOB’s apparent impotence in dealing with their Guatemalan counterparts on this issue, along with […]
