Understanding the Greek debt crisis

A while back I noted that we should be looking at Greece for where not to end up in the future, seeing that G.O.B. keeps borrowing more and more every day that goes by; adding more and more debt on the shoulders of every Belizean that will have to be paid for by many future generations. I want to share these videos with you all so you can understand what’s going on in Greece and better look at what’s happening in Belize and hopefully stand up and fight for the future of Belize. After all, our children and their children […]

Paycation or Payscam: Belize’s New Certified Travel Agency 3

Introduction Two weeks ago, I saw that a lady posted on Facebook that she had completed a training to be a Certified Travel Agent. She appeared interested in doing bookings for Belizeans. I was a bit puzzled by this. I would have expected that it’s much more lucrative to book tours for international visitors to Belize than being interest in booking Belizeans out of country. Thinking little of it, I just continued scrolling my Facebook feed. Certificate received by Belizean Today, I became suspicious when I saw another Belizean posted that he too had completed a program and is now a Certified Travel […]

The truth of why Europe wants Greece to suffer

Another reason why Belize should be paying attention to what is going on in Greece and start to make changes before we get to the same place. The truth about the never-ending financial crisis & the cult of extreme austerity Greece’s financial nightmare has lasted five years now. There’s no sign of real relief—for a very specific reason   For someone who writes about economics, the situation in Greece offers two enticing elements: the ability to spin out moments of high drama, and the probability it will endlessly repeat forever. We’ve experienced five years (really, here’s one of my first […]

Want to know the future of Belize? See Greece

Pay attention to what’s happening in Greece. We’ve posted about this before and things di geh dread as we say in Belize. Greece is slowly being led to slaughter house and Belize is going to the same place, Greece is at the door, Belize is making it’s way down the chute. Greece’s economy will be locked down with capital controls if it can’t find a deal by the weekend European governments are ready to push for capital controls in Greece would mean a severe lockdown on flows of cash … strict limits on the amount that could be withdrawn from […]

The hidden force in global economics: sending money home

Last year there was huge debates about what Belizeans in the Diaspora do for the motherland and the people there. Someone asked in a Belizean newspaper “What have you done for me lately?” others pointed to other things, but mostly the concept was insinuating that the Diaspora doesn’t do much for the nation. There was one ignorant fellow that made the remark in public forum that: In 2013, the Central Bank of Belize reported that remittances were $72.2 million or about 2.23% of our gross domestic product (GDP). Economists will tell you that any activity generating 2.23% of GDP is […]

BELIZE – Home Mortgage Crisis Costing Billions

By: Richard Harrison On October 10, 2008, the leading newspaper in Belize, the Amandala, wrote “The Central Bank of Belize’s new Governor, Glen Ysaguirre, told Amandala this morning that “we are pretty much safe,” referring to Belize’s financial situation.” This was in response to a question regarding the effects the financial crisis in the USA could be expected to have on Belize…and in the wake of the US$700 billion bail-out package and the cutting of the Federal Reserve interest rate which took place that week. On June 24, 2009, our Prime Minister addressed the UN General Assembly representing Belize and […]

Belize: The State Of The Nation

By: Richard Harrison Today, on the eve of our 33rd year of INDEPENDENCE…. I kneel in service to deliver the STATE OF THE NATION address. Instead of dealing with all and sundry, gifts and glory, today I take off my gloves to try to deal a death blow with the little strength I have left…. to only ONE, but principal among the obstacles to the development of my country and people…. who, deep in my heart of hearts, I believe aspire to greater INDEPENDENCE. 33 years ago, all the citizens of BELIZE pledged allegiance to serve the best interest of […]

Belize Gets $10.5 Million Loan For Small Business Development

Belize has received a $10.5 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank for small business development, the bank announced last week. The loan is to the country’s Development Finance Corporation, which works to improve home ownership, human development and the development of micro, small and medium-sized businesses. “MSMEs are fundamental to the economic landscape of Belize and are estimated to account for a significant share of economic activity and employment generation,” the CDB said in a statement. “However, they are usually faced with a number of challenges including limited access to, and the cost of financing.” The bank said the […]

BRICS countries facing increasing political risk says Aon

Aon Risk Solutions, the global risk management business of Aon plc (NYSE: AON), today unveiled its 2014 Political Risk Map which identifies an increased risk rating for all five emerging market BRICS countries. As a result, countries representing a large share of global output experienced a broad-based increase in political risk including political violence, government interference and sovereign non-payment risk. Brazil’s rating was downgraded; political risks have been increasing from moderate levels as economic weakness has increased the role of the government in the economy. This is of particular concern given this year’s World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. Russia’s […]
