EXPOSED: Covering up the Penner Incident

So late last year I noted Why nothing may happen with the UDP Immigration Scandal, and we got proof of it from Channel 5 News. It seems that this Government is willing to go to any lengths to cover up their criminal activity. How much longer will Belize keep tolerating this kind of behavior? It is almost six months since former Minister of State with responsibility for Immigration Elvin Penner was removed from Cabinet for his role in the illegal issuance of a passport to South Korean fugitive sitting in a Taiwanese jail. There have been allegations of multiple investigations, […]

The sad state of governance and justice in Belize

Recently, in Belize, there was the case of Belize Police Corporal Gino Peck, a well-respected officer, who was charged with the possession of unlicensed ammunition. It is both a peculiar, yet enlightening case in that it demonstrated: (1) the crass nature of amendments to the Firearms Act of 2008 and 2010 and its appropriateness, (2) the manner in which this act can conceivably be used as a tool of oppression, (3) the vulnerability of citizens involving this abominable piece of legislation and (4) the existence of a variety of other-relevant issues. In the case of Corporal Peck, his home was […]

Belize PM says US should change form of Government

Amidst all the corruption taking place in Belize the PM gives advice to the US about how to solve their problems. I think he forgot about all the problems in Belize and how our way of Governing has not only brought us to where we are but keeps it happening. How do you advise a people what’s good for them when you can’t even do what’s good for your own people? Prime Minister of Belize — Our Government’s BETTER Than Yours

Dirty Scandal… No Action 1

By Audrey Matura-Shepherd It is possible that a person’s mind and/or a nation’s psyche could be so saturated with the negatives and scandals that they just become desensitized, sinister, or fatigued that they just cannot deal with it anymore? However, for a person or nation to reach that point it has to be that internally, their reasoning mechanism just cannot or does not want to process one more thing, because the psyche is now detecting it is the new norm it is dealing it, not as a mind-boggling, shocking, jerk –you-out-of-your-senses event. For some reason it seems that this is […]

Why South Korea, Taiwan and Belize can't let this Big Man blow over like wah lee breeze 3

By Jose A. Sanchez A big man’s game   Perhaps September is the month that will allow some people to recognize the value of nationality, of being Belizean. That value allows over 350,000 people to belong to a land, to have a kindred spirit to all the square miles that our borders allow. That value is inhaled in the air we breathe, felt in the fertility of the soil, consumed by the food on the land and it consumes us when we return to the earth. Belize belongs to us much as we belong to Belize. But intrinsic value is oft […]

Belize Minister accused of unwanted sexual advances in Taiwan

And tonight there are reports of more scandal coming out of Taiwan involving a Belizean politician. Credible reports to this newsroom say that Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport Edmund Castro, who left for Taiwan last week, was sent home after a Taiwanese female Ministry of Foreign Affairs staffer complained that he had made unwelcome sexual advances upon her. Our reports say, the act of indiscretion created quite a stir in Taipei’s official circles. As a result, very senior officials in Taiwan reportedly complained directly to Belize’s Prime Minister Dean Barrow on Thursday. He reportedly called Castro and […]

Voters Not So Sure About Double Election

But is the public ready to face two ballots at the polls on March seventh? Today our intern Robin Schaffer took to the streets this afternoon to ask a few pedestrians if they knew and if they were ready. She found a mixed bag of public opinion:.. Robin Schaffer “Do you heard that both elections; the general and municipal will be on the 7th March?” Interviewee 1 “Yes I heard it.” Robin Schaffer “What’s your reaction to that? Do you think it’s a good idea?” Interviewee 1 “Anyone will do.” Robin Schaffer “Is it encouraging you to vote? Do you […]

Votes 4 Citizenship Program 3

Amidst all the hustle and bustle of every day life in Belize there is something happening and most of the people aren’t really paying attention. Our Belizean Citizenship is being marketed away to anyone that promises to gain votes for the upcoming elections. We all know that this is a normal thing in Belize, but this is honestly the first time that I have seen it done this way, so blatantly open and in your face; defiant of the laws and constitution of the country. It’s like they know something that we don’t that is allowing them to do as […]

More New Citizens Sworn In – Just In Time For Elections 3

7NewsBelize Wed, January 18, 2012 Today there was another swearing in of new Belizean citizens in Belmopan. Over 200 new citizens were sworn in at the George Price Center in Belmopan – making it about 750 new citizens naturalized in less than two weeks. The unseemly haste to process and naturalize has everything to do with elections, because only Belizean citizens can vote – and after these citizens are sworn in, the other rush will be to register them. Tonight we can report that – under these political pressures – things are sliding in all directions – mainly at the […]

Hon. Penner Says He's Paying Half For 100 New Citizens 2

7NewsBelize Wed, January 18, 2012 And working the process from the other end is the UDP’s Cayo Northeast Area Representative Elvin Penner. He’s one of the few elected representatives we saw working the ground today – although many UDP minister’s had their political operators working on the ground. Indeed, many of them see this as the battleground that may determine the outcome of the next election. Make no mistake; a large part of that crowd is the function of pure political muscle, machinery and money. Yes, money. It costs three hundred dollars for an adult to get his or her […]
