The Effect of Cannabis on Pregnant Women & Newborns

It’s almost too taboo to discuss: pregnant women smoking marijuana. It’s a dirty little secret for women, particularly during the harrowing first trimester, who turn to cannabis for relief from nausea and stress. If you were to inquire about pot and pregnancy on the Web, Baby Center offers a strongly worded warning from Gerald Briggs, pharmacist clinical specialist. Briggs says that pot affects the baby’s growth and development and—gasp!—may even cause childhood leukemia. But there are no facts or studies attributed to back up the claims. More than 50 pages of comments were posted to the site about Briggs’ statements. […]

The Union – Marijuana Documentary 2

Ever wonder what British Columbia’s most profitable industries are? Logging? Fishing? Tourism? Ever think to include marijuana? If you haven’t, think again. Commanding upwards of $7 billion Canadian annually, The Union’s roots stretch far and wide, directly and indirectly affecting all areas of our society. With 65% to 85% of all ‘BC Bud’ being exported to the United States, it’s clear that the BC marijuana trade has become […]

Marijuana and your Health

Please note, there is still a great deal of research to be done concerning the effects of marijuana on the health of humans. Marijuana has often been touted as one of the safest recreational substances available. This is perhaps true; many reputable scientific studies support the conclusion that cocaine, heroine, alcohol, and even cigarettes are more dangerous to the user’s health than marijuana. Due to it’s pharmacological properties, thirty-six states have permitted its use as a therapeutic drug for, among others, those suffering from AIDS; various painful, incurable and debilitating illnesses; the harmful side effects of cancer chemotherapy, and glaucoma. […]

The medical perspective on decriminalizing marijuana possession

You will have heard by now of a proposal to decriminalize the possession of a small quantity of marijuana. The pros and cons of this proposal have been and will continue to be debated; and there are strong arguments on both sides. The recreational and medicinal use are separate and distinct issues; this week, Healthy Living gets the medical facts on marijuana,  its effects and one medical professional’s opinion on the issue of decriminalization. Marleni Cuellar, Reporting By now, either by means of drug education or the glamorized drug use in pop culture, most people are exposed to marijuana and […]

Thoughts on Marijuana 1

Marijuana is better for you than lighting up a cigarette. Cigarettes have things like tar and other unnatural things that will turn your lungs black and give you cancer, while marijuana doesn’t. The difference is a) marijuana affects you more, b) cigarettes are legal, and c) there are no deaths recorded that have come from Marijuana alone. However… Most street marijuana has been laced with other chemicals, like rat poison and other insecticides. These increase the feeling of intoxication. Obviously, if a chemical would kill another form of life, it would not be good for you. You need to suspect […]

Dr Oz on Medical Marijuana

Is marijuana a powerful medical tool or a public health hazard? Since being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, Montel Williams has launched a personal campaign to find a cure for MS and legalize medical marijuana. From the time he began taking medical marijuana, no additional plaque has formed in his brain. Hear his story. What are the pros and cons of medical marijuana, as you see it? Any medicine that helps humans, I am supportive of. I’m cautious about medical marijuana because I know that some people will abuse it, but I hate to penalize suffering people just because of a […]

Decriminalizing the weed in Belize 1

With  steady increase in use and a high number of people becoming criminals for simply possessing a stick of “herb” (notice that society does not really distinguish between the classes of criminals, they see criminals as criminals. Been to jail? You are a criminal.) and the large amount of money and man hours it takes to keep Marijuana illegal it only makes sense to decriminalize the thing. Marijuana or Weed as it is locally known grows wild in Belize and for a long time has been used as remedies for several ailments including Joint Pain (soaked in green rubbing alcohol). […]

Pot smoking does not damage lung health

Reuters6:45 p.m. CST, January 10, 2012 By Genevra Pittman (Reuters Health) – A few hits on the bong now and then don’t seem to have any detrimental effects on lung health, suggests a new study. Researchers found that several measures of lung health actually improved slightly as young people reported using more marijuana — at least up to a couple of thousand joints in a lifetime. “There’s no doubt, if you’ve watched a Harold & Kumar movie, marijuana triggers a cough,” said Dr. Stefan Kertesz, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who worked on the new study. But questions […]
