It has been brought to our attention that the New River has become polluted by refuse from the Sugar Factory in Tower Hill.
To whom it may concern,
I hope this email finds you doing well. I am a primary teacher at a private school in Carmelita Village. On a swimming trip to New River at the toll bridge in Tower Hill, Orange Walk, my friend and I experienced extremely warm, foamy water that stank and stung our eyes. We immediately got out and, upon closer inspection, noticed several dead fish floating along the bank. A tour operator nearby told us that the sugar cane factory had dumped its refuse into the river downstream. I am extremely disappointed that the cane factory would do such a thing (if true). I am also disappointed that any governing body would allow such a thing to go by unaddressed or unpunished. There are many ways of safely disposing of waste in these modern times.
Unfortunately, I was not completely sure who to contact about this issue so I am sending this to multiple offices. I am sorry if this inconveniences you but I believe it is an important issue, mostly for our wildlife, ecosystem, and the future well-being of the country of Belize, but also for the tourism industry and general enjoyment of the river.
If this issue is ever addressed, which I pray it will be, I would love to hear the report of any data collected. I am only a concerned person and not an environmental professional so I trust that the appropriate persons will take action and investigate this matter completely.
Thank you for your time,
