Re: Elected Officials Financial Disclosure deadline, March 1st 2012
In accordance with the Prevention of Corruption Act passed on September 27th 1994, every elected official must submit sworn annual disclosures by March 1st for the previous year ending December 31st. This must be done for year previous to being elected, the years in office and the year after leaving office.
For the last four years the Integrity Commission has shamefully failed to comply with its mandate to receive, examine, investigate and publish an annual report to the National Assembly and in the Gazette. In the absence of such a report, I have called for each elected official at the town, city and national assembly, to publish their sworn disclosures so that the voters can see they were not unlawfully enriched while in office. We remind each elected person of the following section of the law:
13. Any person who;
a. fails without reasonable cause, to furnish to the commission a declaration which he is required to furnish in accordance with this act, shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 10k, or for imprisonment of a term not exceeding three years, or both such fine and imprisonment.We further remind each elected official of their oath of Allegiance and Office as enshrined in Schedule 3 to the constitution section 131 (1):
I, _____________do swear that I will bear true faith and allegiance to Belize and will uphold the Constitution and the law, and that I will conscientiously, impartially and to the best of my ability discharge my duties as _____________and do right to all manner of people without fear or favor, affection of ill-will. (So help me God)
I, Bobby Lopez, will declare my assets, income and liabilities upon being elected as your representative for Belize Rural South. I WILL uphold the Constitution and the Law.
