Flood testing .. Interesting

Reading Belize news I came across an article on the 7 news site that made me wonder what is happening in Belize and what is wrong with the responsible parties and the media. It strikes me very strange that a test as huge as this is going to be launched with little details regarding what checks are in place should something go wrong, how much of a flood will be caused, what liability plans have been put in place in the event that something goes wrong and I hope that it does not.Reading Belize news I came across an article on the 7 news site that made me wonder what is happening in Belize and what is wrong with the responsible parties and the media. I find it interesting that they say all these plans and warning systems are in place but little to no documentation as far as we can tell has been made public for the average citizen to see. I call on the Government, environmentalist, NEMO and especially BECOL to come forth with documentation showing what plans they have in case a real catastrophe should occur. I would also suggest a video documentary done on the dam, how it functions, what checks and balances are in place that prevent something from going wrong and if something does go wrong, what happens and how long it will take for said checks and balances to kick in as well as what kind of fall-backs are planned like financial, emotional and psychological assistance for the affected families and business along the path of destruction.

For years, environmentalists have asked the questioned – what if the Chalillo Dam breaks? Well on Thursday they’ll get somewhat of a partial answer because there will be a flood simulation exercise in San Ignacio and Santa Elena. The National Emergency Management Organization along with Belize Electric Company Limited and the Cayo District Emergency Committee will test the preparedness of schools, families, but more importantly the early warning sirens and evacuation system that have been the subject of contention between BECOL and environmentalists in the area. The simulation starts at 7 am on Thursday.

Happy reading, I hope that the right thing will be done and that no harm will come to anyone or anything because of Chalillo.
