The struggle for Maya land, oil, and gold

by Robin Llewellyn 11 July 2012 After two very recent attacks on Maya community leaders in Guatemala, the challenges faced by the lawyers applying domestic law and international indigenous rights legislation to these conflicts are revealing, as legal concepts are reinterpreted by governments in indigenous communities across the Maya region of Central America. On the night of 12 June two men broke into the home of José Tavico Tzunun in Santa Cruz del Qiché, Western Guatemala, and murdered him. Tzunun was a member of the K’iche’ Peoples Council in Defense of Life, Mother Nature, Earth, and Indigenous Territory. He helped […]

UnHappy Birthday Belize

I wanted to wait for the festivities to simmer down before I put my thoughts out to my fellow Belizeans. I do not know how you will receive my speech or how it will be scrutinized, but these are my heartfelt convictions. I heard some of the speeches and for the most part heard a lot of pretty flowers, shiny gems and smelt nice perfume that all masked the reality that our nation faces today, 33 years and a couple days old. I won’t go into the pretties too much, you know that is not me. My idea is to […]

Gulf of Mexico clean-up makes spill 52 times more toxic

Mixing Oil With Dispersant Increased Toxicity to Ecosystems Article from Georgia Tech   Nov. 30, 2012 — If the 4.9 million barrels of oil that spilled into the Gulf of Mexico during the 2010 Deep Water Horizon spill was a ecological disaster, the two million gallons of dispersant used to clean it up apparently made it even worse — 52-times more toxic. That’s according to new research from the Georgia Institute of Technology and Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes (UAA), Mexico. The study found that mixing the dispersant with oil increased toxicity of the mixture up to 52-fold over the oil […]

PETITION: Maya Homeland in Belize Threatened by Americal Oil Prospectors

To: Honourable Prime Minister Dean Barrow An international community of friends, allies and consumers of Belize tourism, agriculture and marine products want the governments of Belize and the United States to know that we are aware of the tenuous situation that is unfolding in the pristine cloud forest, ancient bog, and unique tropical wetlands of Southern Belize. The sensitive ecological systems of Belize must be protected from damage by oil or other industry. Belize’s burgeoning tourism industry must be protected from the negative impacts of oil development. The environmental risks and environmental health consequences of oil or other mineral development […]

New World, whose only assets are in Belize and Denmark, is focused on onshore projects in the two countries. The company said that the proceeds from a placing of 95.6 million new shares in the business would be used to fund the drilling of a third well at its Blue Creek Project in the Petén Basin in […]

About All Energy Corp. / Princess Petroleum Belize Joint Venture 1

Major oil discoveries have been made within the Yucatan area. Much of the geology of Belize, especially in the northern half of the country, is a southward extension of the geology of the Yucatan. Petroleum deposits in south-eastern Mexico and Guatemala occur in two main geologic provinces, the Gulf Coast Tertiary basin area and the Petén Basin. Major oil production is from intensely micro-fractured Paleocene, Cretaceous, and Jurassic carbonate reservoirs. Several small oil fields have been discovered in Cretaceous carbonate reservoirs in west-central Guatemala, and one major discovery has been reported in north-western Guatemala. Small-to medium-sized oil accumulations also occur […]

Against Offshore Oil Exploration and Drilling in Belize 4

A steady stream of pollution from offshore rigs causes a wide range of health and reproductive problems for fish and other marine life. Offshore drilling exposes wildlife to the threat of oil spills that would devastate their populations. Offshore drilling activities destroy kelp beds, reefs and coastal wetlands. Over its lifetime, a single oil rig can: Dump more than 90,000 metric tons of drilling fluid and metal cuttings into the ocean; Drill between 50-100 wells, each dumping 25,000 pounds of toxic metals, such as lead, chromium and mercury, and potent carcinogens like toluene, benzene, and xylene into the ocean Pollute […]
