What Guatemala does not want the world to see

While the Government of Guatemala burns through the budget on lavish lifestyles, keeping an unfounded claim on our independent nation of Belize, swarms of families live below extreme poverty and live their lives in the garbage dumps. Guatemala would do good with starting to address the basic human rights of their citizens before they look for more expenditures elsewhere but then again, the Oligarchy does not suffer so they do not care. Factory Farming – It's coming to Belize 1

I watched Food Inc when it was released and it is important to watch. I have asked media houses in Belize to air this so people understand what is happening around them. I know you have heard the terms GMO or Organic Food; you may have even heard of Factory Farming. If you have not heard about these you may be asking what these are about. GMO – Genetically Modified Organism GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory through genetic engineering, or GE. This relatively new science creates unstable […]

Chikungunya Virus

Chikungunya (pronunciation: chik-en-gun-ye) virus is transmitted to people by mosquitoes. The most common symptoms of chikungunya virus infection are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Outbreaks have occurred in countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Indian and Pacific Oceans. In late 2013, chikungunya virus was found for the first time in the Americas on islands in the Caribbean. There is a risk that the virus will be imported to new areas by infected travelers. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat chikungunya virus infection. Travelers can protect […]

UnHappy Birthday Belize

I wanted to wait for the festivities to simmer down before I put my thoughts out to my fellow Belizeans. I do not know how you will receive my speech or how it will be scrutinized, but these are my heartfelt convictions. I heard some of the speeches and for the most part heard a lot of pretty flowers, shiny gems and smelt nice perfume that all masked the reality that our nation faces today, 33 years and a couple days old. I won’t go into the pretties too much, you know that is not me. My idea is to […]

How the U.S. State Department Promotes GMO Global Agenda 2

Biotech Ambassadors by Food & Water Watch In the last decade, the United States has pursued foreign policy objectives on food and agriculture that benefit a few big seed companies. This commonly takes the form of the U.S. State Department exercising its diplomatic prestige and bully pulpit to pressure foreign governments to adopt policies favored by the agricultural biotechnology companies. Food & Water Watch’s comprehensive analysis of State Department diplomatic cables reveals a concerted strategy to promote agricultural biotechnology overseas, compel countries to import biotech crops and foods that they do not want, and lobby foreign governments — especially in […]

Belize Jungle Remedies featured in Chicago News

We all know about Belize Jungle Remedies, some of us got and still get our daily doses and scheduled parasite clean-outs. This is a normal thing in Belize as well as other nations in Central America and it’s nice to see that others from more advanced nations that don’t believe in anything but what a doctor prescribes at crazy prices are still reaching out for help. Growing up in Belize, I can attest that what I have used does work, you remember sina or Epazote right 😉 and the pharmacology in the US for example have researchers sifting through many […]

Asbestos in Drinking-water

Background document for development of WHO Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality Originally puiblished in Guidelines for drinking-water quality, 2nd ed. Vol. 2. Health criteria and other supporting information. World Health Organization, Geneva, 1996. Preface One of the primary goals of WHO and its member states is that “all people, whatever their stage of development and their social and economic conditions, have the right to have access to an adequate supply of safe drinking water.” A major WHO function to achieve such goals is the responsibility “to propose regulations, and to make recommendations with respect to international health matters ….” The first […]

The War on Kids

The War on Kids is a 2009 documentary film about the American school system. The film takes a look at public school education in America and concludes that schools are not only failing to educate, but are increasingly authoritarian institutions more akin to prisons that are eroding the foundations of American democracy. Students are robbed of basic freedoms primarily due to irrational fears; they are searched, arbitrarily punished and force-fed dangerous pharmaceutical drugs. The educational mission of the public school system has been reduced from one of learning and preparation for adult citizenship to one of control and containment. Filmmaker […]

Ractopamine

The FDA ruled that ractopamine was safe and approved it for pigs in 1999, for cattle in 2003 and turkeys in 2008. As with many drugs, the approval process relied on safety studies conducted by the drug-maker — studies that lie at the heart of the current trade dispute. The drug, ractopamine hydrochloride, is fed to pigs and other animals right up until slaughter and minute traces have been found in meat. ref Pharmacologically, it is a beta-adrenergic agonist. It is the active ingredient in products known as Paylean for swine and Optaflexx for cattle, developed by Elanco Animal Health, […]

Biotechnology Issues for Developing Countries

GMOs and Development Edgar J. DaSilva Director, Section of Life Sciences Division of Basic and Engineering Sciences UNESCO, Paris, France E-mail: e.dasilva@unesco.org Important issues such as the conservation of the environment, the energy crisis, expansion and migration of populations, use of agro-residual resources, ocean agriculture, global warming, water security, biowarfare, and emerging diseases have somehow made it to the top of the agenda of international co-operation. The perennial problems of widespread starvation linked to poverty are now back again in the limelight as a result of globalization, biotechnology and summit meetings. Novel agriculture, genetic modified organisms (GMOs), GM crops and […]

What is GMO

A GMO is a genetically modified organism (also called “genetically engineered”): a plant, animal, or microorganism that is created by means that overcome natural boundaries. Genetic engineering involves crossing species that could not breed in nature. For example, genes from a fish have been placed in strawberries and tomatoes. Many people believe that GMOs will make food better tasting, more nutritious, and longer lasting. Others hope that they will help feed the developing world’s growing population. However many, like Mori-Nu, worry that neither the FDA, the Department of Agriculture (USDA), nor the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has done any long-term […]
