How the U.S. State Department Promotes GMO Global Agenda 2

Biotech Ambassadors by Food & Water Watch In the last decade, the United States has pursued foreign policy objectives on food and agriculture that benefit a few big seed companies. This commonly takes the form of the U.S. State Department exercising its diplomatic prestige and bully pulpit to pressure foreign governments to adopt policies favored by the agricultural biotechnology companies. Food & Water Watch’s comprehensive analysis of State Department diplomatic cables reveals a concerted strategy to promote agricultural biotechnology overseas, compel countries to import biotech crops and foods that they do not want, and lobby foreign governments — especially in […]

Ractopamine

The FDA ruled that ractopamine was safe and approved it for pigs in 1999, for cattle in 2003 and turkeys in 2008. As with many drugs, the approval process relied on safety studies conducted by the drug-maker — studies that lie at the heart of the current trade dispute. The drug, ractopamine hydrochloride, is fed to pigs and other animals right up until slaughter and minute traces have been found in meat. ref Pharmacologically, it is a beta-adrenergic agonist. Chuck Norris battles genetically modified foods

On Memorial Day weekend, 2 million people marched in protests against seed giant Monsanto for the purpose of bringing awareness to hazards from genetically modified food, which it and other companies manufacture. Organizer Tami Canal said protests were held in 436 cities in 52 countries. Genetically modified plants are grown from genetically modified, or engineered, seeds, which are created to resist insecticides and herbicides so that crops can be grown to withstand a weed-killing pesticide or integrate a bacterial toxin that can ward off pests. The Chicago Tribune reported that because genetically modified organisms are not listed on food or […]

A River of Waste: The Hazardous Truth About Factory Farms

A heart-stopping new documentary, A RIVER OF WASTE exposes a huge health and environmental scandal in our modern industrial system of meat and poultry production. Some scientists have gone so far as to call the condemned current factory farm practices as “mini Chernobyls.” In the U.S. and elsewhere, the meat and poultry industry is dominated by dangerous uses of arsenic, antibiotics, growth hormones and by the dumping of massive amounts of sewage in fragile waterways and environments. The film documents the vast catastrophic impact on the environment and public health as well as focuses on the individual lives damaged and […]

Silence of the Bees

Published on May 9, 2012 In the winter of 2006, a strange phenomenon fell upon honeybee hives across the country. Without a trace, millions of bees vanished from their hives. Silence of the Bees is the first in-depth look at the search to uncover what is killing the honeybee. The […]

Sugar Shortage Explained

7 News Belize Last year Belize experienced an acute sugar shortage – very sad for a country that produces sugar in abundance. The subtext to the entire episode was the fact that sugar was being smuggled out of Belize to be sold at a premium in Guatemala and Mexico. It’s the kind of thing where everyone knew what was up but no one could say for sure how it was happening. But a bust of contraband sugar in Guatemala has blown the whole thing open. On Saturday, Guatemalan authorities seized a truck carrying 140 sacks of smuggled white sugar from […]

Some chicken may have small amount of arsenic but keep eating away

The Food and Drug Administration says some chicken meat may contain small amounts of arsenic, though the agency is stressing that the amount is too tiny to be dangerous to people who eat it. The FDA said Wednesday that a new study developed by the agency shows that an ingredient in chicken feed that contains arsenic, called Roxarsone, may make its way into parts of the bird that are eaten. Previous studies have indicated that the arsenic was eliminated with chicken waste. Pfizer Inc., which makes the feed ingredient, said Wednesday that it will pull it off the market in […]
