Introduction Two weeks ago, I saw that a lady posted on Facebook that she had completed a training to be a Certified Travel Agent. She appeared interested in doing bookings for Belizeans. I was a bit puzzled by this. I would have expected that it’s much more lucrative to book tours for international visitors to Belize than being interest in booking Belizeans out of country. Thinking little of it, I just continued scrolling my Facebook feed. Certificate received by Belizean Today, I became suspicious when I saw another Belizean posted that he too had completed a program and is now a Certified Travel […]
A list of videos that explain many things about international finance. Not specific to Belize but it allows you to get a good idea of how things work; well, at least how they should work. Have fun learning.
I wanted to wait for the festivities to simmer down before I put my thoughts out to my fellow Belizeans. I do not know how you will receive my speech or how it will be scrutinized, but these are my heartfelt convictions. I heard some of the speeches and for the most part heard a lot of pretty flowers, shiny gems and smelt nice perfume that all masked the reality that our nation faces today, 33 years and a couple days old. I won’t go into the pretties too much, you know that is not me. My idea is to […]
By: Richard Harrison Today, on the eve of our 33rd year of INDEPENDENCE…. I kneel in service to deliver the STATE OF THE NATION address. Instead of dealing with all and sundry, gifts and glory, today I take off my gloves to try to deal a death blow with the little strength I have left…. to only ONE, but principal among the obstacles to the development of my country and people…. who, deep in my heart of hearts, I believe aspire to greater INDEPENDENCE. 33 years ago, all the citizens of BELIZE pledged allegiance to serve the best interest of […]
By Grace Kranstover and Ragini Chatterjee Nestled on the northeastern coast of Central America, Belize is often named one of Central America’s most beautiful vacation destinations. With its ornate coral reefs and rainforest, the small English-speaking country has plenty to offer for tourists looking for tropical adventures. Yet, Belize is rapidly becoming known to the international community for attracting many drug trafficking organizations known for transporting marijuana and cocaine into North America. Since the country’s currency is conveniently pegged to the U.S. dollar, Belize also offers nonresidents the opportunity to run offshore accounts. Money laundering has become a prime form […]
Belize has received a $10.5 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank for small business development, the bank announced last week. The loan is to the country’s Development Finance Corporation, which works to improve home ownership, human development and the development of micro, small and medium-sized businesses. “MSMEs are fundamental to the economic landscape of Belize and are estimated to account for a significant share of economic activity and employment generation,” the CDB said in a statement. “However, they are usually faced with a number of challenges including limited access to, and the cost of financing.” The bank said the […]
First off let me say that with the recent “get rich quick” schemes that have been popping up around Belize, this one smells like one of them from the start. I may be wrong but. Kilimanjaro Capital (KIMJF), a “new breed” natural resource company based in Belize, is looking to acquire an interest in Tanzanian gold assets controlled by Sika Resources Inc., a Canadian company. In a press release issued Friday morning, Kilimanjaro Capital announced an agreement in principle had been made with Sika Resources “to acquire an interest in world class gold assets in Tanzania.” Tanzania is the third […]
