11th May 2013 BELIZE COALITION FOR JUSTICE CALLS FOR BOYCOTT OF RESCHEDULED REFERENDUM
Following the recent meeting held between Belize’s Foreign Affairs personnel and their Guatemalan counterparts at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C., under the aegis of the OAS Secretary General, it was announced that the decision was taken to acquiesce to the DEMANDS of the Guatemalans to postpone the referendum. Undoubtedly this decision by the GOB, is consistent with its failed foreign policy involving Guatemala, which is steeped in: ACCEPTANCE, ACCOMMODATION AND CAPITULATION. It does not bode well for Belize, for it demonstrates distinct weakness and an unmistakable dearth of competent leadership on this matter of national significance.
As a result, despite Guatemala’s intentional breach of the mutually agreed upon date to hold simultaneous referenda on 6th October 2013, the Belize delegation caved in and let them off the hook. By virtue of this determination, the Guatemalans were, in effect, rewarded for their intransigence and Belize has agreed to allow for the date of the referendum to be rescheduled for sometime in 2014.
With this egregious and untenable decision, the Belize Coalition for Justice (BCJ) calls on all civil society organisations and unions to join in solidarity to BOYCOTT ANY REFERENDUM CONCERNING GUATEMALA’S UNFOUNDED CLAIM TO BELIZE THAT IS RESCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE OTHER THAN ON THE ORIGINAL DATE OF 6TH OCTOBER 2013.
This has become necessary due to the GOB’s inability and unwillingness to hold Guatemala to its word. Therefore, since those who were afforded the responsibility of ensuring Belize’s wellbeing are not up to the task, it is time to demonstrate the true meaning of “people power”. In this regard, the BCJ seeks to make certain that our nation ceases from being submissive to the DEMANDS of an aggressor, meanwhile ensuring that our citizens are not duped into accommodating those who do not have Belize’s best interest at heart.
