… If I didn’t need my papers I would not be here you know. We are people that are indeed in a strange land, we what to have and practice this right but without papers (Citizenship) we cannot do it and that is the reason why we are here suffering hunger and heat under the sun.
In return for what will you get your papers?
Well of course a vote, because that is what they are asking us; that if we get our Nationalization that we vote for the person.
For which person in which division are you to vote?
I will tell you the truth, up until now I have no idea; because if I knew I would have been in front of that person myself to see who it is or to understand their purpose and what would favor us. But up to now, we have no idea.
How did you find out about this issue today, that you would be getting your papers?
Well it is happening all over Belize, first that it was in Kings Park then to Avenue where we are today, but like I said; we have no guarantee that we will get it. We are only guessing that we will and that is not right.
How long have you and your family lived in Belize?
We’ve already lived her for 19 years.
Then you qualify, why do you have to humble yourself like this?
My children are settled here in school. They’ve studied here for over 12 years, this is something that I have proof for and not that anyone can question.
The Immigration Department, have they never helped you?
I have tried four times to fight for it but nothing ever happened, nor the red (UDP) nor the blue (PUP). Nothing.
Are you willing to vote if they give you your papers?
But of course, that is what I want.
And whomever gives you your papers, that is who you will vote for?
