Michael DeShield's letter to the various Ministries and to the PM about GMO 1

This is Michael’s letter to the various Ministries and to the PM. It was submitted to Amandala Press and The Reporter for publishing. Dear All, The decision to import GM seeds into Belize is folly. At the very least, it’s extremely premature. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority does not have the resources, time, or capacity to do any meaningful monitoring of this environmental release. I find it incredulous that the product was brought in and no risk analysis was conducted. For goodness sake, BAHA does risk analysis for importation of milk powder into this country. It does point to the […]

Dear Reader 2

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, we’re approaching the end of sweet corn season. For at least two or three more weeks we’ll be seeing plenty of corn available at roadside stands, framers markets and most grocery stores. So get it while you can, because it will soon be gone. But be on the safe side, pass on the stuff piled in produce bins at your local store because there’s a very good chance it’s Frankencorn and I’m sorry to report that It’s Alive, ALIVE!

Why object to GMOs

These companies were able to patent life forms (think about just how ridiculous that sounds) such as seeds and plants because of gene modification. A seed patent means the right to exclude anyone from making, using, saving or developing the patented product. If it is a machine, it doesn’t matter; if its is an airplane, it doesn’t matter, because Boeing makes airplane that a local farmer doesn’t know how to make. But in terms of seeds, when a companies like Monsanto has the patent right to it, A FARMER SAVING SEEDS IS TREATED LIKE A THIEF – an intellectual property […]

Bad Seed: Danger of Genetically Modified Food

In the last thirty years global demand for food has doubled. In a race to feed the planet, scientists have discovered how to manipulate DNA, the blueprint of life, and produce what they claim are stronger, more disease-resistant crops. However, fears that Genetically Modified Food may not be safe for humans or the environment has sparked violent protest. Are we participating in a dangerous global nutritional experiment? This informative film helps the viewer decide if the production of genetically modified food is a panacea for world hunger or a global poison.

Letter to Ministers

Please express your disapproval of Government’s decision to bring into Belize high risk genetically modified food by calling or writing any or all of the Ministers and CEOs under whose responsibility this decision lies. Personal letters are of course best, but a template is provided here which you can copy and paste into your own word processor.   Dear Hon. Minister, The unilateral action of Ministry of Agriculture in authorizing trial genetically modified (GM) crops is simply unacceptable – and contravenes the Belize National Biosafety Policy of 2009. GM crops carry substantial risks, including: Health risks for humans, livestock and […]
