Mother’s day, the one day in the year dedicated to celebrate and honor mothers around the world on the second Sunday of May. This is a new holiday that was started in the early 20th century by Anna Jarvis and should not be confused with pagan and Christian traditions or the 16th century Mothering Sunday in the UK which is what’s celebrated in most countries as well.

Depending on which country you are in the day has different meanings and is celebrated on different days. Some believe that it dates back to the Greek festival to Cybele, mother of the Greek gods around the Vernal Equinox. International Women’s Day, is practiced on March 8 in many countries as well. The spelling is very specific to make it singular so that every family can celebrate their mother and not all mothers in the world.

The holiday has become so commercialized these days that Anna herself has become a major opponent of what the holiday had become and spend all her inheritance and life fighting what she thought was an abuse of the celebration. She criticized the purchase of cards as a sign of being too lazy to wrote a personal letter. She was arrested in 1948 for disturbing the peace while protesting the commercialization of the celebration and finally made a statement that she wished she had never started the day because it had gotten so out of control.

To this day it is the most commercially successful occasions. Americans alone spend approximately $2.6 billion on flowers, $1.53 billion on pampering gifts like spa treatments, $68 million on greeting cards and will generate about 7.8% of US jewelry industry’s revenue.

That being said we want to wish all mothers around the world, HAPPY MOTHER”S DAY!
